GnRH agonist is effective in organic and idiopathic forms of central precocious puberty and in patients with central precocious puberty following virilising disorders. Height prediction in patients with central precocious puberty who are successfully treated with GnRH agonists consistently improves with therapy; however, only a handful of patients have reached final height to confirm ultimately that GnRH agonists improve adult stature. Preparations of GnRH agonists are available which can be given every day or every month, and other delayed-release preparations are being developed. With such therapy, growth rate and bone age progression slow, pubertal advancement ceases, and the patient is returned to a prepubertal endocrine state as long as therapy continues.
